From Six Grocery Stores to 1,320: ATB, the Supermarket Chain Born in Dnipro

ATB, a food supermarket chain headquartered in Dnipro, says it began in 1993 with six grocery stores and, by early 2026, had 1,320 stores across 22 oblasts. This article separates the company's own claim of being “Ukraine's largest” chain from the figures in the state company register, the store counts that differ between versions of its own history, and the revenue and profit recorded in that register, based on materials available as of September 2026.

The Ukrainian food supermarket chain ATB (Cyrillic: АТБ, pronounced roughly “ah-teh-BEH”) is a company headquartered in Dnipro. According to the limited liability company that runs it, “ATB-market,” at the start of 2026 it had 1,320 stores in 352 towns and villages across 22 of Ukraine’s oblasts. The company says its 2025 goods turnover was UAH 294.2 billion.

The company calls itself “Ukraine’s largest chain.” What is that comparison based on? This article separates out the company’s own claims, the copy of the state company register, and the financial figures recorded in that register, to look at the company’s origins and scale. It does not cover how to choose a store or how to shop there.

1993: Six Grocery Stores in Dnipropetrovsk

According to the company profile on its own site, the chain began in 1993 when six grocery stores (гастроном) in the city of Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) were brought together under one company. It says the name “ATB-market” was adopted in 1998, taken from the initials of “AgroTechBusiness” (АгроТехБізнес). Since then, according to the company, all its stores have operated under one brand and one format.

The current operating company’s own registration came later. According to a copy of the entry in the state register of legal entities (ЄДР) shown by Opendatabot, the limited liability company “ATB-market” (registration number 30487219) was established on July 19, 1999, and is registered at an address in the city of Dnipro. Its main line of business is classified as “non-specialized retail sale predominantly of food, beverages and tobacco.”

Former Name / Current Name

Both the company’s name and the town’s name have changed over time. “ATB” was originally short for “AgroTechBusiness” (agriculture, technology, business), and that abbreviation is now the store’s name outright. The home city was renamed from “Dnipropetrovsk” to “Dnipro” by a Verkhovna Rada resolution of May 19, 2016. The background to that renaming is covered in our article on the two place-name laws.

Timeline: Store Count and Turnover (as the Company States Them)

The company profile on its own site has rewritten its figures over time. Drawing on versions preserved in the Wayback Machine, here are the main figures.

Two Different Store Counts for “Early 2022”

The store count for the same period, “early 2022,” differs between versions of the company profile. The version saved in July 2024 gives 1,346 stores, while the version saved in June 2025 gives 1,250. The number of towns and villages also differs, 294 versus 298. It is possible one of the two simply carried over a figure from a different point in time, but the company has not explained the discrepancy. Both are given here.

Revenue and Profit in the Company Register

The company describes itself as a “socially significant entity” and says it prepares its financial statements under International Financial Reporting Standards. The financial figures (annual revenue and net profit) attached to the copy of the register entry are as follows.

The company profile’s “2025 turnover of UAH 294.2 billion” and the register’s “2025 revenue of UAH 247.3 billion” are, for the same year, counting different things: the former is the company’s own figure for the scale of in-store transactions, the latter is revenue from its financial statements. Which figure is which needs to be checked when comparing them.

According to the same register, the company’s shareholders are three Cypriot companies (holding roughly 89% combined) and two Ukrainian individuals (roughly 11% combined), with four individuals recorded as ultimate beneficial owners.

What Is “Ukraine’s Largest” Comparing?

The description “largest chain” is the company’s own claim. The company profile gives as its basis that it is at the front of the industry by “number of shoppers, turnover, and taxes paid,” and states that more than 4 million people shop at its stores every day. Earlier versions also described the company as the “largest employer.”

However, this article cannot show a ranking, from a public body or independent research, that compares it with other chains on the same yardstick. Rankings could change depending on whether you compare by number of stores, by revenue, or by sales floor area. The share of wholesale and retail trade in Ukraine’s overall economy is shown, using State Statistics Service figures, in our article on industries under wartime conditions (13.8% of gross value added in 2024).

Private-Label Products

The company’s site names four private (own-brand) labels. “Svoya Liniya” (Своя Лінія, “Our Own Line”) is, according to the company, its flagship brand in the “upper-mid” price range, while “Rozumnyi Vybir” (Розумний вибір, “Smart Choice”) is a brand for basic goods sold cheaply. “De Luxe Foods & Goods Selected” is a brand for imported foods, many made by European manufacturers, and “Den u Den” (День у день, “Day by Day”) is described as its brand for everyday foods.

All of these are as described by the company, and their quality or price has not been compared by an independent body. The company’s site also states that its in-store food-safety management system has held an international certification since 2017 (the ISO 22000:2018 certificate is dated July 24, 2025).

Stores in Wartime

On November 20, 2022, the company reported that it was reopening stores in the city of Kherson after its liberation from Russian occupation. The company says it was one of the first retail chains to resume operating there.
